Something To Be Proud Of...

So it's tradition, we always have tamales for Christmas Eve dinner. If you don't know what they are, they're basically seasoned pork rolled in a corn tortilla like thing, then wrapped in a corn husk and steamed. We always counted on my grandmother to make them, but it was time we started doing it for ourselves. So my mom decided to learn how to do it. It's a process that's for sure. It includes the task of cooking a pork product that I'd rather not even talk about. Being squeamish, and also for the sake of the kids we omitted that step. Whew! We enlisted Bryan to find out all the tamale making secrets from his grandmother, who makes the most delicious tamales ever. This little old lady is so sweet, she's 80 some years old and still wakes up and goes to work as a cook for a very longstanding and popular mexican restaurant here in town. So she has some cooking tricks up her sleeve.
We gathered all the ingredients and began the process. Bryan even got his hands dirty to help. This man does not cook either, believe me, but he did a great job. He probably was more meticulous than I at making them look perfect and uniform. My Grandma came over later that night to supervise us, she wanted to make sure we were doing it correctly.
So anyway, here's my very first tamale and I am damn proud of it.

And it sure was yummy.
